Heading North...
I'm off to Chicago tomorrow, but only for one night, alas. I'm attending a dinner for one of my former teachers from TEDS, Prof. John Woodbridge, in honor of his sixty-fifth birthday. I can think of no better words to describe Prof. Woodbridge than J. R. R. Tolkien's description of Master Elrond in The Hobbit: "as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a king of dwarves, and as kind as summer." It will be delight to honor so fine a mentor.

Congratulations are in order for my very own Doktorvater, Prof. David Steinmetz. It was announced today that, along with George H. W. Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, John Roberts, and a host of assorted Nobel and Pullitzer prize winners, Prof. Steinmetz has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For those of you who may not know, this is a very big deal--the academic equivalent of winning an oscar, though I don't think there's any shiny statuary being given away. GPoD: 4.22.2006

Here are the Cracker Boys, Graham and Jack, spending some time with Cora Marie this evening (top). Graham looks rather forlorn as the two crawlers move along in search of new toys, leaving him stationary (second from top). Jack gives Graham an enthusiastic love pat--easy, big fellow! (second from bottom) Graham and Jack think they're bats (bottom).
